As in every business today, electronic files, such as Adobe Acrobat PDF files, have enabled communication processes to be more paperless now than in years past. Printing several sets and shipping them for approval between the project team is becoming unnecessary given the technology tools available today. After launching eCommunication software more than four years ago, end users have experienced an easy and central online place to access documents securely, accountability amongst project team members, reduced liability risks, a greener process eliminating mail and print costs, reduced phone calls and emails, and a refined communication process. We will demonstrate these benefits and how this contributes to an awesome and quick electronic document closeout package for the owner, as well.

The National Pattern of Multi-modal Coal Movements

This presentation describes the creation of an Integrated Freight Network Model that incorporates the modes of highway, railway, and waterway to model the flows of commodities between the modes and across the network. This model uses data obtained from the U.S. Energy Information Administration to map the movement of all coal shipments in the U.S. from origin to destination. The aggregated volumes on the network segments reveal the geographic distribution patterns of coal throughout the U.S. The model is helpful for transportation planners and practitioners who want to better understand how and where coal is moved to and from particular places. The model can also be used to demonstrate how disruptions in the network, such as at lock and dam facilities, alters the shipping patterns of coal.

One of the most challenging areas of engineering design lies in the handling of difficult mediums. As an engineer, we must design systems to operate in the most extreme conditions. In some applications, this involves chopping and pumping of prison uniforms and like material while in other cases only cigarette butts and tissue paper are needed to be passed by the pump. In order to ensure a pump station to have a long life with minimum maintenance, engineers must match the correct style of pump to the media being handled.

This presentation will accurately depict design criteria for proper pump selection and inform the participant of key differences between pump design and capabilities. The participant will come away with a clear understanding of which type of pump to use for various sewage applications.

SPI creates a two-way communication conduit for project sponsors and meeting participants. For the professional, SPI allows for a broader range of questions to be asked. For the general public, SPI creates an environment where feedback is anonymous, efficient and effective. SPI solicits public input to provide relevant information for solving complex community-based planning and design problems. Remedial Measures Plan of LFUCG Consent Decree

The Remedial Measures Plan (RMP) for the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government’s (LFUCG) Division of Water Quality (DWQ) is a $600,000,000 capital plan for addressing sanitary sewer overflows within the LFUCG sanitary sewer system.  The RMP was developed and is being implemented as a required element in the Consent Decree between LFUCG, the
United States Environmental protection Agency (EPA), and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet’s (EEC) Division of Water (DOW).

Implementation is required in 12 years. LFUCG must design, spend and construct sanitary sewer improvements at an expenditure rate of $50,000,000/year.  The plan calls for construction of 48 miles of interceptor sewers, upgrades or new construction of 13 sewage pump stations, and the construction of eight wet weather storage tanks with total capacity of 108,000,000 gallons.

The RMP is single largest public improvements project ever undertaken in Fayette County including projects by the University of Kentucky and the State Transportation Cabinet.

The presentation will address efforts of LFUCG to successfully implement this program.

Attendees will look at in-place concrete buildings as a testament to concrete’s durability and resilience. With concrete construction techniques, disaster resilience in buildings is a real possibility today. Concrete buildings with low cost techniques available today can be energy efficient, and be designed to create whole net-zero energy neighborhoods. The program looks at how reinforced CONCRETE can achieve disaster resilience, energy efficient buildings as well as reducing noise transmissions through walls. Kentucky leads the nation in this type of construction. The program is certified for continuing education heath safety and welfare credits through the AIA, and the GBCI.
