2005 KSPE YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Michael D. Mattingly, PE

Press Release:  Immediate Release

Louisville Engineer Mike Mattingly is

Named State’s Young Engineer of the Year

(Frankfort, Kentucky – February 3, 2005):  Michael D. Mattingly, P.E., a civil engineer working in the area of civil and environmental projects for the consulting engineering firm Fuller, Mossbarger, Scott and May Engineers (FMSM) in Louisville, Kentucky, is the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE) Young Engineer of the Year.

The award recognizes his outstanding contributions to KSPE, the engineering profession, and to civic and humanitarian causes, particularly during the past year.  He is an active member of KSPE and other professional, technical, and civic organizations.

His contributions to engineering and the public, to name a few, include:

o      Graduation in 2001 from Kentucky’s own Leadership P.E. program – a leadership development program designed specifically for professional engineers,

o      Serving as a MATHCOUNTS coach for a Louisville school (MATHCOUNTS is a national math competition created by and organized by professional engineers),

o      Serving as a MATHCOUNTS chapter (regional) coordinator and assistant coordinator and volunteer,

o      Serving as a classroom leader for DiscoverE – a national outreach program targeted to elementary school children and designed to introduce students to the world of engineering,

o      Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, and

o      Serving as a judge for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized for something that I love to do—being able to serve my community and share my gifts with others.  I am very humbled to represent so many great engineers and individuals in our profession,” says Mattingly.  He credits his achievements to support from others.  “I am so blessed to have full support and encouragement from my wife Stephanie, who is always there for me, and I’m very thankful of the support from FMSM.”

Mattingly says he plans to use the award as motivation to continue his works.  “Receiving this recognition makes me excited about what I do, and encourages me to do even more.”

A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Mattingly attended the University of Kentucky College of Engineering.  He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1994 and a master’s of civil engineering degree in 1995.  Following graduation, he began working for Golder Associates in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was a geotechnical engineer.

In 1998, soon after passing the civil engineering exam to become a licensed professional engineer, Mattingly and his wife, Stephanie, moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he joined FMSM Engineers as a project engineer.   At FMSM, he has developed a broad base of experience in geotechnical and water resource engineering including: planning, permitting, design, and construction for water resource, waste management, transportation, and stream restoration projects.

Mattingly lives with his wife and their three children in Louisville, where he is an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

His parents are Mike and Pam Mattingly of Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky. His grandparents are J.C. and Dolores Mattingly, and Clifton and Della Thomas, also of Lebanon.

In the near future, his application will be entered for consideration of the National Young Engineer of the Year Award.  It is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).  The national award will be presented in July 2005.
