MATHCOUNTS Competition Dates
How We Chose Them
The National MATHCOUNTS Foundation provides the guidelines by which all state MATHCOUNTS programs adhere.
Chapter competitions must be held in February during a range of dates provided by the National MATHCOUNTS Foundation.
State competitions must be held in March during a range of dates provided by the National MATHCOUNTS Foundation.
The Kentucky MATHCOUNTS office attempts to coordinate competition dates to avoid conflicts with as many academic competition and testing events as can reasonably be done, specifically, Governor's Cup and Duke TIPS (ACT/SAT) testing.
The Kentucky MATHCOUNTS office works 2 years in advance of a Kentucky State Competition to set state competition dates because a hotel must be booked for Friday and Saturday events.
Because of our need to book a hotel well in advance, MATHCOUNTS often selects competition dates before other academic competitions or testing dates have been set.
Once dates for chapter and state MATHCOUNTS competition dates have been set, it is highly unlikely that the dates will be revised. This is because we must contract with facilities to hold the MATHCOUNTS event. Contracting with a facility in which to hold a MATHCOUNTS event is a financial obligation that cannot easily be undone in many instances. In some instances, such an obligation cannot be undone. In the case of a MATHCOUNTS State Competition, once a hotel contract is signed, it cannot be undone.
