Chapter Competition Info:
Dear
Coach/Coordinator,
Plans are being finalized for the 2006 MATHCOUNTS Louisville Chapter Competition. We are extremely excited that your school has elected to participate and will make every effort to make it a great experience for you and your students. We have attempted with this document to provide a fact sheet of information for the competition.
____________________________________________________________________________
The major item is that we will need a list of your team and individual competitors' names.
Please provide
the following information:
- their name, including the pronunciation if necessary
- their gender
- their age
- their year in school (i.e. 6th, 7th or 8th grade)
- whether they are competing as part of the team or only as individuals
We are attaching an example form that was provided by one of the schools last year. Input the information pertaining to your school in the form and e-mail to my attention at kmeyer@questeng.com. The information can also be mailed or faxed to my attention at the numbers listed below.
_____________________________________________________________________________
You are also welcome to bring a limited number of unofficial competitors if you have some interested students who may be competing for your school next year. These unofficial competitors will be allowed to take the same tests and share in the excitement of the day's festivities. However, their tests will not be graded, they will not be eligible for award prizes, and they will not receive t-shirts or certificates. They will be offered the free lunch with the other competitors. I do not need a list of unofficial competitors; however, it is very important that we obtain an estimated total for planning. Please indicate the number of unofficial competitors that you will be bringing.
You are allowed to make substitutions to your list of competitors up to, and including the morning of registration. However once testing has gotten underway the student who begins the test must finish testing or voluntarily leave the competition at which time no substitution may be made. If you make last minute substitutions the change will not be reflected in the MATHCOUNTS brochure handed out on the day of competition and the certificates each competitors receives on the day of competition will have to be furnished at a later date for the student who was a late substitution.
Schedule
The Louisville MATHCOUNTS competition will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2006 in Ernst Hall at the University of Louisville’s Speed Scientific School. Following is an agenda that indicates the time of each event.
Morning
8:00 - 8:30 am Registration
8:30 - 9:00 am Welcome Address and Instructions
9:00 - 10:00 am Sprint Round
10:00 - 10:40 am Target Round

Afternoon
12:30 - 1:15 pm Countdown Round
1:15 - 1:30 pm Break and Award Setup

Location and Parking
Ernst Hall is located on the south side of Eastern Parkway, between Crittenden Drive and 3rd Street. I-65 exits for Eastern Parkway are available in both the northbound and southbound directions. Vehicles leaving I-65 will need to travel in the westbound direction. Traveling on westbound Eastern Parkway, you will cross over the CSX railroad bridge. Ernst Hall will be the first building on the left after crossing the tracks. Plenty of parking exists directly behind the building.
Check in Process for Coaches
This year, coaches and students will sign-in at two different locations. The students will continue to register in the main lobby of Ernst Hall. Teachers will be asked to register in the grading room, which will be located on the first floor. Signing will be in place to direct individuals as required.
The scoring computers will be available in the grading room to facilitate with last minute name or information corrections.
Parent Information
Parents and coaches are welcome to stay in the auditorium through the Welcome Address and are invited to return to watch the Countdown Round and Awards Presentation. No one other than competitors and those administering the testing will be allowed in the testing area during the Sprint, Target and Team Rounds. As always, the Countdown Round in Kentucky is used only for fun and does not count towards determining the winning teams and individuals who will advance to the State Competition. The Countdown Round is played by the top 10 competitors as determined by the morning's testing and competitors will be awarded separate trophies for this part of the competition.
During the testing there will be a coaches hospitality room in Ernst Hall. Free coffee and refreshments will be available and coaches will have the opportunity to go over the actual tests the students are taking. A free lunch will be provided for the competitors, coaches and MATHCOUNTS volunteers in the building immediately adjacent to the testing area.
As a reminder, students/coaches are required to bring their own calculators. It is a good policy for the coach to have extra calculators in case one of their students has a problem with theirs. Any calculator other than those with QWERTY keys (similar to a computer keyboard) are acceptable. Paper and pencils will be provided to the students when they arrive in the testing area. So, other than a calculator, there is nothing else they need to bring.
We have established a "Bad Weather" policy. In the event of inclement weather we will issue notices to the following local TV stations: WHAS 11, WAVE 3, and WLKY 32, as well as WHAS AM 840 radio. I, along with my co-chair Mike Sewell, will try to reach each coach by phone on the morning of competition if there is a need to cancel due to weather. Therefore please provide me with a phone number (home or cell phone) where I can reach you between the hours of 6:00 am and 7:00 am on the morning of competition. You may also want to make a note of my cell phone number in the event you need to reach me that morning for some reason. It is 552-4618.
